چکیده

This paper presents algorithms that (1) facilitate system-independent synthesis of timing-interfaces for subsystems and (2) system-level selection of interfaces to minimize CPU load. The results presented are developed for hierarchical fixed-priority scheduling of subsystems that may share logical recourses (i.e., semaphores). We show that the use of shared resources results in a tradeoff problem, where resource locking times can be traded for CPU allocation, complicating the problem of finding the optimal interface configuration subject to scheduability. This paper presents a methodology where such a tradeoff can be effectively explored. It first synthesizes a bounded set of interface-candidates for each subsystem, independently of the final system, such that the set contains the interface that minimizes system load for any given system. Then, integrating subsystems into a system, it finds the optimal selection of interfaces. Our algorithms have linear complexity to the number of tasks involved. Thus, our approach is highly suitable for adaptable and reconfigurable systems.

Weighted-HR: An Improved Hierarchical Grid Resource Discovery

Grid computing environments include heterogeneous resources shared by a large number of computers to handle the data and process intensive applications. In these environments, the required resources must be accessible for Grid applications on demand, which makes the resource discovery as a critical service. In recent years, various techniques are proposed to index and discover the Grid resource...

A hierarchical Quality of Service control architecture for configurable multimedia applications

In order to achieve the best application-level Quality-of-Service (QoS), multimedia applications need to be dynamically tuned and reconfigured to adapt to fluctuating computing and communication environments. QoS-sensitive adaptations are critical when applications run in general-purpose systems, with no mechanisms provided for supporting resource reservations and real-time guarantees. Such ada...

Quasi-optimal grouping for broadcast systems with hierarchical modulation

Recently, we proposed to combine time sharing with hierarchical modulation to increase the transmission rate of broadcast systems. Our proposal involves to group the receivers in pairs in order to transmit with hierarchical modulation. We introduced several grouping strategies but the optimal matching remained an open question. In this letter, we show that the optimal grouping is the solution o...

Resource Sharing Networks : Overview and an Open Problem

This paper provides an overview of the resource sharing networks introduced by Massoulié and Roberts [20] to model the dynamic behavior of Internet flows. Striving to separate the model class from the applications that motivated its development, we assume no prior knowledge of communication networks. The paper also presents an open problem, along with simulation results, a formal analysis, and ...

Optimal DVB-S2 spectral efficiency with hierarchical modulation

We study the design of a DVB-S2 system in order to maximise spectral efficiency. This task is usually challenging due to channel variability. The solution adopted in modern satellite communications systems such as DVB-SH and DVB-S2 relies mainly on a time sharing strategy. Recently, we proposed to combine time sharing with hierarchical modulation to increase the transmission rate of broadcast s...
